Health Impact Coalition

Who we are:

The Health ImPACT Coalition is a large and diverse group of over 200 organisations worldwide aiming to raise awareness and build support for the meaningful inclusion of health in the Pact of the Future, Global Digital Health Compact and the Declaration on Future Generations, both leading up to and during the UN Summit of the Future on September 22-23, 2024.

The Coalition is coordinated by representatives from ITPC Global, Global Network of People Living with HIV (GNP+), Frontline AIDS, WACI Health, STOPAIDS and Global Fund Advocates Network (GFAN).

Our priorities:

Currently, health is not substantively included in the draft Pact of the Future and there is no reference to the unmet commitments of SDG3.  As a fundamental driver of sustainable development, the foundation of humanities, well-being and a commitment made by Member States, health must be a cross-cutting, intersectional issue across the Pact of the Future, Global Digital Compact and Declaration on Future Generations.

Why does this matter?

Today, over half of the world’s population lacks access to essential health care and prevention services and health protection laws and policies. The Pact for the Future cannot speak of the interests of future generations without prioritizing the right to health, among all economic, cultural and social rights. And, action on health requires action on the social, commercial and political enablers of health and well-being.

There is no future without health. Without equitable access to health for all, we cannot eradicate poverty, inequality or tackle our climate crisis. There is no health if it is not properly funded, or if our governments are crippled by debt and tax injustices or remiss in implementing health protection laws and policies that also prioritize equitable investment for local manufacturing capabilities. We have already seen that private financing and provision of health services drives health and gender inequities. Our future generations deserve the right to health to be fully realized.

What are we asking for?

We call on Members States and other relevant stakeholders to:

  • Reinforce health as a cross-cutting, intersectional issue across the Pact for the Future, Global Digital Compact and Declaration on Future Generations

  • Commit to accelerate progress towards universal health coverage by addressing inequalities within and between countries and fulfilling the commitments made in the 2023 UHC high-level meeting Political Declaration; recognize that in low- and middle-income countries, the best way to achieve UHC is by finishing the unfinished fights against preventable, treatable diseases like TB, HIV and malaria

  • Increase global, regional and domestic investments in sustainable public health systems everywhere, recognising their critical role in helping to prepare for, identify and respond to existing and emerging health threats

  • Acknowledge and advance to health rights as necessary for fulfilling all other human rights. Every human being is entitled to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health conducive to living a life in dignity. Commit to addressing and advancing  gender equity

  • Commit to increasing the meaningful contribution of affected communities in governance, accountability and leadership through formal representation of communities and civil society in governance and decision-making processes; and increased use of community-generated data for change, innovation and accountability

Please note that the Coalition is currently envisioned as a time-bound platform specifically linked to the UN Summit of the Future. We currently have no dedicated funding or budget to support this work, and a limited timeframe to achieve our objectives. Despite these constraints, we are committed to uniting global health advocates around our core priorities, and to ensuring transparency and inclusivity in our engagement throughout this process.
